Nature Reserve for saving one species of birds

 

In Australia, creating a new reserve area of 56 thousand hectares. in order to maintain or not the rarest species of birds - parrots night (Pezoporus occidentalis (Gould, 1861)).

Collections Manager of South Australian Museum Dr. Philip Horton says about the discovery is: "This is one of the holy Grail bowls, and probably one of the rarest species in the world."

This Australian parrot believed extinct since '75, there was no information about his observations. But in 2013, naturalist John Young discovered bird and its feathers in south-west Queensland. Since ecologist Dr. Steve Murphy began targeted research in this place. He said it is clear that save the species from extinction today depends from conservation of the localities spread birds. Location nature reserve remains a mystery, because scientists are very concerned about the extremely small number of parrots and their detection could threaten the conservation of species. Birds can threaten a variety of factors, such as fire, wild predators (including cats) and humans.

The creation nature reserve plan to spend 5 million dollars, of which 400 thousand – to Action plan the conservation of this species. Financing the preservation of these unique birds received from the NGO "Save the Bush legacy" (Australia), the government of Queensland, private charitable contributions from organizations and individuals.

One of the major threats to species was the lack of knowledge about the parrots and their distribution. Therefore, the researchers say that it is important to preserve to search other locations spread species in Australia, and if found - there to create protected areas. This is consonant with the general intent cent increase protected areas (17%), as stated by the Minister of National Parks Steven Miles. Today, protected areas cover only 7.7% of Queensland.
